Writing the Visual Arts Way

Exercise One: Write about a forgettable experience.

  • When I woke up this morning, I felt the comfort of the covers encasing my body. I reluctantly left the bed and shuffled over to put on my slippers to head to the bathroom. After slipping the slippers onto my feet and grabbing my toothbrush, I walked down the hallway to the bathroom. As I entered, I admired the new Jungle Themed decorations that they put up the previous night. It brought a sense of adventure to my day. I trudged to the far end of the sinks, putting my toothbrush and toothpaste down on the second to last sink because the last one spews water like an angry geyser. Here I wetted my toothbrush, squeezed the minty paste onto it, wetted it again, and began to brush my teeth. This morning I brushed my teeth quickly because I was running a bit late, but I still made sure to get every side of my teeth to banish the plaque to the depths of the sink. I watched my frothy spit disappear into the drain with some help from the water from the faucet, and my task was done.
Exercise Two: Write it again, more vague, correction technique, different style.
  • I reluctantly opened my eyes, turning off my alarm clock. I must have let it go longer than usual because I didn’t remember hearing that part of the little song before. Opening my eyes, I see my roommate standing at the door. She looks cheerful. Wait, I cant see details because I don’t have my glasses on. She might look cheerful, she might look angry. I haven’t a clue. I reach up and put my glasses on my face where they belong to confirm that she is indeed in good spirits this morning. Do I have to get out of bed now? Probably. If I sleep in any more I wont be able to get lunch before class. Slowly I sit up in bed, still wrapped up in the comfort of my covers, but I was warm. Why am I still wrapped up in the covers? Too hot. Throwing them off, I got out of bed and found my way to my slippers. Sliding my feet into their fuzzy, soft interior, which wasn’t so soft and fuzzy anymore, I grabbed my toothbrush and toothpaste to head out the door to the bathroom. The hallway had a funky stench from all the wet umbrellas and boots from the previous day, but I tried not to think about that. Eventually I reached the end of the hallway where the bathroom is. I am reminded of the Jungle decorations they put in last night. How fun, brushing my teeth in a jungle! Though its really just the same crappy school bathroom as usual. I took my usual place at the sink at the end of the rows. No, not the end, the second to last sink. I quickly scrubbed my teeth, making sure to get all sides of each tooth even though I was in a rush. As the frothy spit hit the sink, I turned on the faucet and watched it disappear into the sinky depths. My task was complete.
Exercise Three: Lists. Lists of objects, actions, descriptions.
  • The music plays, return to the real world, eyes open, grumbles in frustration, turns over, extends arm, clumsily reaches for phone, turns off the alarm, sighs in defeat, stretches, releases self from the confines of the blankets, stands up lazily, looks around the dark room, shuffles over to the once fuzzy slippers, slides feet in, grumbles some more, grabs toothbrush and toothpaste from the desk, trudges through the smelly hallway, enters the jungle bathroom, places self in front of the second to last sink, brushes teeth quickly, the task is done.
  • Music, alarm, waking up, eyes open, reaching, looking, feeling, silencing, releasing, uncovering, saying goodbye, slippers, feet, toothbrush, toothpaste, hallway, bathroom, sink, water, paste, spit.
